Description
Vancomycin SDV 1 gm is a glycopeptide antibiotic used to treat severe bacterial infections caused by gram-positive organisms. It is particularly effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other multidrug-resistant strains. Vancomycin is primarily indicated for the treatment of bloodstream infections, endocarditis, bone and joint infections, skin infections.
The mechanism of action of vancomycin involves inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to the D-alanyl-D-alanine portion of cell wall precursors, preventing peptidoglycan polymerization and cross-linking, which are essential for cell wall integrity. This action results in bacterial lysis and death. Vancomycin is bactericidal and exhibits time-dependent killing.
Adverse effects of vancomycin may include nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity, infusion-related reactions such as "red man syndrome," and thrombophlebitis. Monitoring of renal function, serum drug levels, and infusion rates is essential to minimize toxicity. Dose adjustments may be required in patients with impaired renal function or in those receiving concurrent nephrotoxic medications.
