Description

Unasyn (ampicillin sodium/sulbactam sodium) 1.5 g is a combination antibiotic formulation used for the treatment of various bacterial infections. It is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms, including those affecting the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and soft tissues. The formulation consists of ampicillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin-class antibiotic, and sulbactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor.

Ampicillin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death. However, some bacteria produce beta-lactamases, enzymes that render ampicillin ineffective. Sulbactam inhibits these enzymes, allowing ampicillin to remain active against these resistant organisms.

Unasyn is administered intravenously and is typically reserved for moderate to severe infections. The usual dosage and duration depend on the severity and type of infection, as well as the patient's renal function.
