Tropicamide 1% Ophthalmic Solution is a pharmacologic agent used for its mydriatic and cycloplegic properties. This medication is typically utilized in ophthalmic procedures to facilitate a more thorough examination of the retina, vitreous body, and other ocular structures. Tropicamide works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles controlling the pupil and lens, which leads to pupil dilation and accommodation paralysis.

The solution is formulated with 1% tropicamide, which acts on muscarinic receptors in the iris sphincter and ciliary muscle. By blocking acetylcholine at these sites, tropicamide inhibits pupil constriction and prevents the ciliary muscle from focusing the lens, thus inducing pupil dilation and loss of accommodation. The onset of action is rapid, typically within 15 to 30 minutes.

Tropicamide 1% Ophthalmic Solution is contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma or hypersensitivity to the drug. It is also used with caution in patients with a history of increased intraocular pressure. Common side effects include blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and ocular irritation.
