Description
Lidocaine 1% Injection, supplied in a 5 mL ampule, is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution primarily used as a local anesthetic and antiarrhythmic agent. Each milliliter contains 10 mg of lidocaine hydrochloride in an isotonic aqueous solution. The medication is designed for parenteral administration and is widely used in clinical and surgical settings.
As a local anesthetic, lidocaine stabilizes neuronal membranes by inhibiting the ionic fluxes required for the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses. This action results in temporary loss of sensation in the area where it is administered. It is commonly used for infiltration, nerve block, and epidural anesthesia. Its rapid onset and intermediate duration of action make it a preferred choice for many minor surgical procedures.
As an antiarrhythmic, lidocaine is used to manage ventricular arrhythmias, particularly in acute situations such as myocardial infarction or cardiac surgery. It acts by suppressing automaticity in the conduction system of the heart and by increasing the threshold for electrical stimulation, thereby reducing arrhythmic activity.
