Description
Cyclopentolate 1% is an ophthalmic solution used primarily as a mydriatic and cycloplegic agent for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in ophthalmology. It works by temporarily paralyzing the ciliary muscle of the eye, preventing accommodation, and dilating the pupil. This allows for thorough examination of the eye, including the retina and other internal structures.
The active ingredient, cyclopentolate hydrochloride, is an anticholinergic agent that inhibits the action of acetylcholine on muscarinic receptors in the iris sphincter and ciliary body. This action results in pupil dilation (mydriasis) and relaxation of the ciliary muscle (cycloplegia), both of which facilitate eye examinations. The effects typically begin within 15-30 minutes after administration and last for 6-24 hours.
This ophthalmic solution is supplied in a 15 mL sterile dropper bottle for ease of use. It is instilled directly into the conjunctival sac of the eye, with one or two drops being the standard dosage. Cyclopentolate 1% is generally well-tolerated; however, some patients may experience temporary stinging, blurred vision, or sensitivity to light.
